How Much Does Gutter Installation Cost?

Seamless aluminum gutters cost $6 to $16 per linear foot installed, so $1,200 to $3,200 on a typical 200 foot house. Vinyl runs $3 to $7, steel $8 to $20, copper and zinc $15 to $40. Downspouts, removal and any fascia repair come on top, and labor is roughly half of every one of those numbers.

The short answer

About a dollar a foot for the metal, and then everything else

Here is the thing nobody tells you about gutters: the gutter is the cheap part. A coil of aluminum costs less than dinner for two, and then a truck, a rolling machine, two people and a ladder tall enough to make your neighbor nervous turn it into a $2,000 job. [I have made peace with this. My accountant has not.]

We are GAF Certified, family owned, and we install and repair gutters across the Triangle alongside our roofing work, which means we see what gutters do to a roof edge when they are wrong. More than 180 households have left us a five star review on Google, and I am fairly sure none of them were about the gutters.

The number that matters is linear feet: the roof edge all the way round, plus the downspouts. A 2,000 square foot house usually lands near 200 feet, per This Old House, and our gutters page covers what we install and repair.

Where the money goes

Six things on a gutter quote besides the gutter

The per-foot number above is the gutter. These are the lines that follow it.

Labor: 40 to 60 percent

Spectra puts labor at $4 to $9 per linear foot and 40 to 60 percent of the total. This Old House averages it at $5 a foot or $70 an hour. Two stories and a steep roof push it to the top of that range.

Downspouts

Aluminum downspout runs $5 to $8 per foot, steel $9 to $12, copper $17 to $20. A two story house needs roughly 20 feet per downspout, and most houses want four to six of them.

Taking the old ones down

Removal runs $50 to $150 on a simple house. NerdWallet prices it per foot plus $150 to $350 for hauling. Cheap, unless the old hangers took the fascia with them.

Fascia repair

Rotten fascia costs $6 to $10 per linear foot to replace, and gutters cannot be hung on soft wood. Our soffit and fascia page covers it. This is the line that turns a $1,500 quote into $2,500, and it is not the gutter company's fault.

Corners, outlets and miters

Every inside or outside corner is a hand-cut, sealed joint, and every outlet is a hole with a downspout hanging off it. A simple rectangle costs less per foot than a house with six bump-outs, which is why nobody serious quotes from the road.

Five inch or six inch

Six inch gutters carry more water and suit big roof planes and steep pitches. They cost more per foot and need bigger downspouts. On a Triangle roof that dumps a summer storm all at once, we will tell you if you need them.

Seamless or sectional

Why the joints decide the price and the lifespan

Sectional gutters come in ten foot lengths from the big box store, and you clip them together with joints every ten feet. Seamless gutters are rolled to the exact length of each run on a machine in the driveway, per This Old House, so the only joints are at corners and outlets.

[Yes, the truck has a machine in it. Yes, it is the most interesting thing on the job. No, you cannot have a go.]

The reason this matters here is rain. Raleigh averages 46 inches a year and a good share of it arrives in summer storms that fill a gutter in minutes. Joints are where sectional gutters leak, sag and eventually separate, and every leak lands on the fascia, the foundation, or your neighbor's patience.

Vinyl sectional is the right answer for a shed. On a house you plan to keep, seamless aluminum is the price point where you stop paying twice.

Gutter guards

When guards pay for themselves, and when they cost more than the gutters

The heavily advertised brands can cost more per foot than the gutter underneath them.

The advertised brands

This Old House prices LeafFilter at $41.72 per linear foot and LeafGuard at $39.59, installed. On 200 feet that is $8,000 for the guards, against $1,200 to $3,200 for the gutters.

The rest of the market

Spectra puts a whole-house guard job at $460 to $4,000, averaging $3,232. Aluminum mesh and hinged screens sit at the low end and do most of the work for most houses.

When they earn their keep

Under pines. Angi's guidance is that gutters under pines want cleaning four times a year against twice under oaks. At our $325 starting price for a cleaning, guards on a pine lot pay back in three to four years.

When they do not

A ranch with no trees within fifty feet does not need guards, and a guard on a gutter that is already undersized just moves the overflow. We will say so rather than sell them.

How we quote

What we measure before there is a number

We walk the roof edge with a wheel and count linear feet, corners, outlets and downspouts, then look at the fascia behind the old gutters, because that is where the surprises live. We check the pitch and the size of each roof plane to decide between five and six inch gutter, and we look at where the downspouts discharge, since a downspout that dumps beside the foundation is a crawlspace problem you did not order.

You get one written price with the gutter, downspouts, removal and any fascia work as separate lines, so you can see what is the gutter and what is the house. Colors come from the same charts our roof colors page uses, so the gutter matches the trim rather than fighting it.

If we are already replacing the roof, the gutters go on the same quote and the same ladders, which is the cheapest gutter installation there is. Our roof replacement page explains how that works.

Questions

Gutter installation cost questions

How much does gutter installation cost per foot?

Installed, vinyl runs $3 to $7 per linear foot, seamless aluminum $6 to $16, galvanized steel $8 to $20, and copper or zinc $15 to $40. Labor is 40 to 60 percent of the total, so the installer matters as much as the metal.

How much do new gutters cost for a whole house?

A typical home carries about 200 linear feet of gutter, which puts seamless aluminum at roughly $1,300 to $3,200 installed. NerdWallet puts the all-in replacement on an average home at $2,000 to $6,000 once removal, downspouts and repairs are included.

Are seamless gutters worth the extra cost?

In the Triangle, yes. Seamless runs are rolled to length on site, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. Sectional gutters have a joint every ten feet, and in a climate that gets 46 inches of rain a year, joints are where gutters fail.

How much do gutter guards cost?

The heavily advertised brands run about $40 per linear foot installed, which can exceed the gutters themselves. Simpler screens and covers cost a fraction of that. Guards earn their keep under pines, where gutters otherwise want cleaning several times a year.

Do I need a permit to replace gutters in Raleigh?

Gutters on their own do not normally trigger a building permit. Fascia or roof edge repairs done at the same time can, and we handle that as part of the job.

How long do gutters last?

Aluminum about 20 years, galvanized steel 20 to 30, vinyl 10 to 20, copper 50 or more, zinc 50 to 80. The hangers and sealant usually give out before the metal.
