Charlotte's defining roof event is still Hurricane Hugo. On 22 September 1989 the airport measured an 87 mph gust and the storm toppled an estimated 80,000 trees in the city, nearly 200 miles from the coast. Charlotte is a city of big trees over roofs, and every windstorm since has repeated Hugo in miniature.
