What we install

Sign types, and what each one asks of the building

A sign is a structural attachment before it is a graphic. What holds it up decides how the job runs.

Channel letters

Individual lit letters, mounted either on a raceway that carries the wiring and spreads the load, or flush to the wall with a penetration per letter. Raceway mounting is standard on brick and block and keeps the wall to one hole for power.

Cabinet and box signs

An enclosed aluminum cabinet with a lit face. Heavier than letters at the same size and a bigger sail in wind, so the anchor points and the wall behind them matter more.

Monument and post and panel

Ground mounted on a concrete foundation. In Raleigh a ground sign over 42 inches needs a sealed engineered footing detail, because the footing is resisting overturning in wind, not just carrying weight.

Projecting and blade signs

Perpendicular to the wall, readable from both directions. Raleigh caps these at 40 square feet, six feet of projection and nine feet of clearance underneath. The wall connection carries a bending moment, so it is the most demanding wall mount per square foot.

Awning and dimensional letters

Copy on or above an awning, or individual non lit letters pinned to the wall. The lightest work we do, where substrate condition matters more than capacity.

Replacement and refresh

New faces in an existing cabinet, a rebrand across several sites, or taking down a sign the last tenant left. Often the fastest permit path, because the structure is already there.

Permits

How a Raleigh sign permit actually runs

A sign visible from the public right of way needs a zoning permit from the City of Raleigh. The city's sign permit page sets the process, and the fee for a commercial sign is $383 per sign in the current development fee guide.

The city's published benchmark for a non residential zoning review is five business days on the first pass, and another five for each round of corrections. Once it is issued, installation has to begin within six months.

Four things decide whether that timeline holds.

  1. An approved Common Signage Plan

A multi tenant property needs one before any sign permit is issued.

  2. Height over 42 inches

Anything taller needs a sealed engineered footing.

  3. Illumination

An illuminated sign adds a separate electrical permit and inspection.

  4. Correction rounds

How many times the drawings come back is the variable nobody can quote for.

The details that hold jobs up

Three rules worth knowing before the drawings go in

Illuminated means a second permit

Raleigh's sign permit checklist requires a non residential permit application when a sign is lit, and an electrical inspection in addition to the sign permit. Signs also have to meet the National Electric Code, which Raleigh's ordinance names directly.

Over 42 inches means an engineer

A ground sign taller than 42 inches needs a sealed engineered footing detail on the submittal. That is a stamped drawing from a North Carolina licensed engineer, not a sketch, and it is worth pricing in from the start.

Ten feet from any power line

No sign may be installed closer than ten feet in any direction from a conductor or utility guy wire. It is the rule that most often moves a monument sign a few feet along a frontage.

Multi tenant sites need a plan first

If more than one business sits on the site, no sign permit is issued until a Common Signage Plan is approved. If one already exists, your sign has to match it.

Questions

Signage questions

Do I need a permit for a business sign in Raleigh?

Yes, for any sign visible from the public right of way. The City of Raleigh issues a zoning permit for wall, ground, projecting and temporary signs, and the fee is $383 per sign for commercial. Installation has to begin within six months of the permit being issued.

How long does a sign permit take?

Raleigh's published benchmark is five business days for a first non residential zoning review, with another five for each round of corrections. Fabrication runs alongside that. A complete submittal on a site that already has an approved signage plan is the fast version.

When does a sign need an engineer?

A ground sign over 42 inches tall needs a sealed engineered footing detail with the application. The footing is resisting wind overturning rather than just carrying weight, so it is stamped by a licensed engineer.

Does an illuminated sign need anything extra?

Yes. A lit sign requires a non residential permit application and an electrical inspection in addition to the sign permit, and the wiring has to meet the National Electric Code. We scope that at the site visit so it is in the quote rather than a surprise.

Do you handle signs for multi tenant buildings?

Yes, and the thing to check first is whether the site has an approved Common Signage Plan. Raleigh will not issue a sign permit on a multi tenant site until one exists, and if there is one already, your sign has to conform to it.

What does a commercial sign cost?

It depends on type and size, so we quote per project. Industry ranges put channel letters roughly between $3,000 and $12,000 and monument signs between $5,000 and $25,000 before permitting and engineering. We price the install, the permit and any engineering separately so you can see what is what.
