Interior and exterior painting in Raleigh
What our prep actually includes, and how the quote is written.
Raleigh averages $1,921, a little under the national figure. The useful part of this page is not the average, it is the per-surface breakdown, because that is the shape a real quote takes and it is where two quotes stop being comparable.

Two numbers, and one note about which is better evidenced.
Painting the interior of a house in Raleigh averages $1,921, with most projects between $930 and $2,923. Nationally the same publisher has it at $2,022, most between $965 and $3,089. So Raleigh runs a little under national at the average and at the top of the range. The Raleigh page is here (4 August 2026) and the national one here (14 October 2026).
The national figure is the better evidenced of the two. It names its basis: 65,117 verified projects. The Raleigh page gives no project count. We are still leading with the local number, because a local figure from invoiced work beats a national average for budgeting your own house, but you should know which one has the sample behind it.
Per square foot is where quotes stop being comparable. The national average is $2.75 per square foot for a standard job and $4.70 once walls, trim and ceilings are all in scope. That is a 70% difference for the same house, and it is a scope difference rather than a price difference. If you are comparing two quotes, compare what each one includes before you compare the number.
Dearest first, ordered by the midpoint of the published range.
| Room | Raleigh cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | $950 to $2,200 | The most expensive room in the house to paint. |
| Kitchen | $325 to $825 | Large, but cabinets and backsplash cover much of the wall. |
| Bedroom | $325 to $800 | The 12 by 12 benchmark most quotes are built on. |
| Stairway or hallway | $375 to $525 | Small area, awkward height. The narrow range reflects the reach. |
| Bathroom | $225 to $450 | Smallest room, least expensive. |

| Room size | Raleigh cost |
|---|---|
| 10 by 10 ft | $225 to $650 |
| 10 by 12 ft | $270 to $780 |
| 12 by 12 ft | $325 to $930 |
| 14 by 16 ft | $500 to $1,450 |
| 16 by 16 ft | $575 to $1,650 |
Same source. Professional interior work in Raleigh is priced at $2.25 to $6.50 per square foot on this page, which is a wider band than the whole-house page gives.
The kitchen row is the one worth pausing on. It is one of the largest rooms in most houses and it is cheaper to paint than a bedroom at the top of its range, because cabinets and backsplash cover a good part of the wall that would otherwise need painting. Living rooms are the most expensive room in the house for the opposite reason: height, wall area and usually the most trim.
The national $2 to $6 per square foot band, applied by house size.
| Home size | Cost range |
|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | $1,100 to $3,300 |
| 800 sq ft | $1,760 to $5,280 |
| 1,000 sq ft | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 1,200 sq ft | $2,400 to $7,200 |
| 2,300 sq ft | $4,600 to $13,800 |
| 2,500 sq ft | $5,000 to $15,000 |
| 3,000 sq ft | $6,000 to $18,000 |
Figures from Angi's Raleigh interior painting page, last updated 4 August 2026. The same page then gives $4 to $6 per square foot for a typical Raleigh home and $4 to $8 where ceilings are high, which is the top half of its own national band rather than the whole of it.
The cheap per-square-foot number almost always describes walls alone.
Almost nobody is quoted for walls alone, and almost nobody realizes that is what the cheap number describes. Walls on their own are $1 to $3 per square foot in Raleigh. Add the ceiling and the trim and you are into the $4.70 per square foot figure rather than the $2.75 one.
Trim is the line most often missed in a comparison, because it is quoted in a different unit. Baseboard and trim run $2 to $4 per linear foot, not per square foot, so a room with a lot of trim and a room with very little can have the same wall area and different quotes.
The table below is every surface and extra the Raleigh pages price. Read it as a checklist for a quote rather than as a budget. If a line on it applies to your house and is not in your quote, that is the conversation to have before the work starts and not after.
Grouped by unit, dearest first inside each group. Mixed units are not comparable across rows.
| Surface or extra | Published cost | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Hard-to-reach areas | $4 to $8 per sq ft | High ceilings, stairwells, anything needing staging. |
| Accent wall | $2 to $6 per sq ft | Also quoted as adding 20% to 30% to the budget. |
| Smooth ceiling | $2 to $4 per sq ft | Priced separately from the walls. |
| Baseboard and trim | $2 to $4 per linear foot | Per foot of trim, not per square foot of room. |
| Walls alone | $1 to $3 per sq ft | The cheapest line on the list. |
| Wallpaper removal | $3 per sq ft | About $535 in a 12 by 12 room before any paint goes on. |
| Popcorn ceiling removal | $1 to $2 per sq ft | A separate job that has to happen first. |
| Wall prep, sanding and patching | $0.50 to $0.75 per sq ft | The line older Raleigh houses almost always carry. |
| Drywall repair | About $600 added | An average, and it varies with severity. |
| Texturing | Up to 50% more | A finish choice, priced as a percentage. |
Figures from Angi's Raleigh interior painting page, last updated 4 August 2026. The wallpaper, popcorn ceiling and drywall figures are jobs in their own right that have to happen before paint goes on, which is why they are on this list rather than in the per-square-foot rate.
Paint itself. The same page says $15 to $40 a gallon depending on brand and finish, and then prints a table running from $25 for primer to $60 for VOC-free paint. Both are below, because that is what the source says. Primer is also sold by the quart at about $10, covering 100 square feet in a single coat.
| Paint type | Per gallon |
|---|---|
| VOC-free paint | $60 |
| High-gloss enamel | $55 |
| Semi-gloss interior | $40 |
| Flat paint | $35 |
| Primer | $25 |
Same page, same date. Three of these five sit above the $15 to $40 range the same page gives two paragraphs earlier.
Same publisher, same city, two pages, two answers. Both are here.
Labor is the biggest line in any painting quote, which makes this the disagreement most worth knowing about.
Angi's whole-house Raleigh page says labor runs $25 to $50 an hour and accounts for 75% to 95% of the total. Its Raleigh room page says painters here charge $50 to $85 an hour, or roughly $500 to $2,800 per room. Those are the same trade in the same city, published two pages apart, and one of the hourly ranges does not overlap the other at all.
We are not going to pick one, and you should not have to. The way around it is to stop buying hours. Ask for the quote by the job, with the surfaces named, the number of coats stated and the prep included or excluded in writing. An hourly rate only tells you anything if you also know how many hours, and nobody will promise you that before they see the walls.
Older housing stock, a season, and one thing to check before anyone sands.
Older Raleigh houses carry the prep line. Angi's Raleigh page is specific about it: older bungalows here may need extra surface prep, adding $0.50 to $0.75 per square foot. On a 1,500 square foot interior that is $750 to $1,125 before a drop of paint, and it is the single most common reason two quotes on the same street differ.
Spring and fall are the easiest windows. The published reason is mild temperatures and lower humidity, which let the paint cure properly. Interior work is far less weather-bound than exterior painting, where the pollen here rules out a chunk of spring, so for inside the house treat this as a preference rather than a constraint.
Anything built before 1978 gets checked for lead first. Sanding or scraping lead paint makes it airborne, and plenty of houses inside the Beltline are old enough to have it. Have the surfaces checked before any prep starts. We are not printing a price for the test, because the page that carries one is not a source we read directly.

Angi's Raleigh page puts the average at $1,921 with most projects between $930 and $2,923, last updated 4 August 2026. Its national page, updated 14 October 2026 and built on 65,117 verified projects, averages $2,022 with most between $965 and $3,089. So Raleigh sits a little under national on both the average and the top of the range.
The national average is $2.75 per square foot for a standard job and $4.70 once walls, trim and ceilings are all in scope. The whole-house range is $2 to $6 per square foot. Angi's Raleigh page gives $4 to $6 for a typical home and $4 to $8 where ceilings are high, and its Raleigh room page gives $2.25 to $6.50. Those are different scopes rather than different markets, which is why the quote in front of you beats any of them.
In Raleigh, $325 to $930 for a 12 by 12 room. By room type it runs from $225 to $450 for a bathroom up to $950 to $2,200 for a living room. A kitchen is cheaper than its size suggests, because cabinets and backsplash cover a lot of the wall that would otherwise need painting.
Exterior, by a wide margin in Raleigh. Exterior painting here averages $3,589 against $1,921 for the interior. Height, staging and prep are most of the difference, and the exterior has to survive weather the inside never sees. Our exterior painting cost guide has the full breakdown by siding type.
Angi publishes two answers for the same city and we are not going to pick one for you. Its whole-house Raleigh page says labor runs $25 to $50 an hour and accounts for 75% to 95% of the total. Its Raleigh room page says painters here charge $50 and $85 an hour, or roughly $500 to $2,800 per room. Quote by the job with the surfaces named and the hourly rate stops mattering.

Both are on this page because that is what the source says. Primer is also sold by the quart at about $10, covering 100 square feet in one coat.
Prep, ceiling height and anything that has to come off the wall first. Sanding and patching adds $0.50 to $0.75 per square foot, drywall repair adds about $600, wallpaper removal is $3 per square foot on its own, and high or hard-to-reach areas move the rate from $4 to $6 up to $4 to $8 per square foot. Older Raleigh bungalows carry the prep line more often than newer houses do.
