The choice is usually between a 5 inch and a 6 inch K-style. The rest is architecture.

The default on nearly every Triangle subdivision home, and it is genuinely enough for a normal roof in normal rain. K-style carries more than twice what a half-round of the same width does, which is why it won the market.

A semicircular profile that sheds debris better than a K-style because there are no interior corners for grit to pack into. It carries less than half the water of a K-style the same width, so it belongs on smaller roof sections.

A gutter can only carry water to a downspout. If the downspout is undersized the gutter overflows no matter how big it is.

Fit one downspout every 30 to 40 feet of gutter, and every 20 to 30 feet where rainfall is heavy. Figures from This Old House.
The capacity table assumes average rainfall. The Triangle does not get average rainfall, it gets long dry spells punctuated by summer storms that drop an inch in twenty minutes. Sizing for the average is how you end up with water sheeting over the front of a gutter that is technically big enough.
The second reason is pine. A 5 inch trough and a 6 inch trough collect the same needles, but the wider one has more room left over once they land. Under pines a 6 inch gutter buys you months between cleanings for very little extra money, because the labor is identical and only the coil costs more.
The third is the downspout, which is where most overflow problems actually start. Builders default to 2 by 3 inch downspouts that handle about 600 square feet each. Going to 3 by 4 inch doubles that, and on most houses it is the single cheapest fix for a gutter that keeps spilling.

Under 5,520 square feet and a 5 inch K-style is enough on paper. Anywhere near that number, go up a size.
