Material, install year and how exposed the roof is. That gets you a realistic estimate of the years you have left.

Mid life. Worth an inspection every couple of years.

Each material starts from a typical North Carolina lifespan rather than the manufacturer rating, because the two are not the same here. Ventilation and exposure then adjust it. A well vented, shaded roof can beat the base figure; a full sun roof over a hot attic will not reach it.
What the calculator cannot see is condition. Granule loss, curling edges and soft decking all override arithmetic, and a roof that took hail three years ago may be closer to the end than its age suggests.
What to do with the number
More than 10 years left: keep the gutters clear and check after big storms.
Five to ten: start setting money aside and get it inspected every couple of years. This is when a small repair is still worth doing.
Under five, or a negative number: book an inspection and get a written condition report. You are planning a replacement, and it is far cheaper to plan one than to react to a leak in February.
The full lifespan guide explains what drives these ranges, and the cost calculator gives you a budget.
Roof life questions
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a planning figure, not a verdict. It uses typical North Carolina lifespans adjusted for ventilation, exposure and storm history. A roof in poor condition can fail well inside the estimate, which is why the inspection matters.
I do not know when the roof was installed.
Check your closing paperwork, or ask a neighbor whose house went up at the same time. Failing that, we can usually date a roof closely from the shingle type on inspection.
Why does ventilation change the number so much?
Because heat is what drives the oils out of asphalt. A poorly vented attic can take five years off an otherwise identical roof, and it is one of the cheaper things to fix.
The calculator says my roof is past its life. Now what?
It means plan, not panic. Book a free inspection so somebody looks at the actual condition. Plenty of roofs run past the estimate, and a few fail early.
